Two consecutive below-par performances only added to the importance of last Friday’s game against Elitzur Yehud. The match also marked the halfway point of the 2020/21 Liga Gimmel season, with Yehud being the final team we had yet to play within our group.

Head Coach David Martane shuffled his starting up from last weekend’s frustrating defeat to Naveh Golan, with long-serving Uruguayan defender Andy Gabay filling in as captain.

Any pre-match nerves would have disappeared almost immediately as Evyatar Erez chipped a pass to Yuval Levi, who cut in from the left onto his favoured right foot and found the net after just a few minutes. 10 minutes later the lead was doubled. Yuval went from scorer to creator, his free-kick met by dominant Nigerian centre-back Dandy Okougo who headed home his first goal of the season.

From that moment on the goals just kept on coming and Ron Sharifi soon had a brace within 7 minutes. For his first, Yuval’s defence-splitting pass sent Azanao Aristo through on goal and he selflessly fooled the keeper to give Ron an open goal. Minutes later, Yuval again danced around the entire Yehud backline before finding an open Ron for his second.

Yuval, who gave a Man of the Match performance, made sure to get on the scoresheet again before half-time, with a trademark right-footed finish after cutting in from the left. Yehud had just one chance in the first half, but our Brazilian keeper Leo Gewertz won the one-on-one, saving the shot and keeping his goal intact.

David made three changes at the break, presumably resting players ahead of Tuesday’s top of the table clash with Givatayim. Surprisingly, it was Yehud who grabbed the second half’s first goal, giving Leo no chance with an accurate shot from outside the box.

Yet, that was the last time they threatened the Inter goal and the remainder of the game was a continuation of the onslaught. Evyatar scored two wonderful goals in quick succession before being substituted.

Azanao found him on the edge of the box, but Evyatar still had a lot of work to do to bring the ball down, wrong foot his marker and then smash the ball into the net with his right. A few minutes later, Yuval got his 4th assist of the game, crossing to Evyatar who lifted the ball over a Yehud defender before firing in with his left.

We scored twice more as the game reached its final stages; Vlad Kart fed Gaston Hilman who finished tidily while the game’s final goal belonged to Andre Walker. The Ecuadorian striker scored his first goal for the club after being assisted by Nico Perge, which prompted a massive cheer from the Inter bench.

The comfortable win means we finish the first round of matches with 4 wins and 2 defeats, putting us in 2nd place halfway through the season.
